What fascinates me is that parallel universes seem to be a real thing. We don’t even have to think of it as all sci-fi or a conspiracy. The parallel universe is not that you are here in this moment reading this, and somewhere on the universal timeline you are doing a backflip. The parallel universe I’m talking about is all in our minds.
Every person sees the world through their own eyes. Whatever we see, hear, and feel is what makes up our minds. Everything you ever saw, heard, felt, and did is what makes you who you are. And everyone is unique, as no two people have exactly the same experiences over the course of their lives. However, we can have a collective memory.
Now, with the rise of social media and the decline in traditional media usage, people get their information from the source they think is most reliable. The information that these media transmit shows different versions of reality. Some sources are twisting the truth. Others are omitting facts. None is neutral, because with news there is always a form of interpretation that makes it, by definition, not neutral.
We get so much information that we think we know everything about any topic. Everyone has become an expert on everything. We think we know what’s right and wrong, what’s good and bad, what’s true or false. But here’s the interesting thing: someone with a different viewpoint has also a different view on what’s up or down.
Personally, I don’t believe in absolute truth. Even widely accepted scientific consensus can be disputed. Although I think it’s unlikely that the Earth is a pancake. A group of people thinks otherwise. I believe that all live originated from sea creatures, thus that the evolution theory is the truth. Again, a larger group of people believes in a different theory. The more we go from mathematical topics to social-political topics, the larger the divide gets.
Where the majority of people make a crucial mistake in their beliefs is that they confuse facts with opinions. They believe an opinion is the truth. But an opinion is not a fact. An opinion cannot be reduced to a simple true or false. To get closer to the truth, you’ll have to gather as many facts as you can. Only then can you figure out what’s true. Although, the conclusion you get will still always be an opinion.
So, the facts and opinion carousel keeps on turning. As long as people interchange facts and opinions, there will always be parallel universes. That’s a fact, and thus it’s true. Or is it?
