When someone doesn't seem interested
Have you ever talked with someone who is constantly on their mobile phone? I think we have all been in these situations. And I think we have all been the culprit.
For sure, this gives the other person(s) in the conversation the feeling of disinterest. But maybe there is also another reason. Maybe the attention offender is only interested in telling their own stories. This gives the vibe that they are more important than you. Also not nice.
Another explanation is that one might avoid a conversation that could go sour. When they control the conversation, they can also control the mood. Unfortunately, this results in inauthentic conversations. One side will always feel as if the conversation is more a monologue than a dialogue. Not nice at all.
My last explanation is that someone might have other things on their mind. A family member can be really sick, so that's on their mind. Maybe they are getting fired from their job, which is also a legitimate thing to worry about. Maybe they forgot whether they turned off their gas stove. Obviously, when this is the case, your talking partner has more dire things on their mind. Whether this is a legitimate reason to let their mind flow out of their body depends on the situation and severity.
There are probably many more reasons why someone doesn't seem interested during a conversation. These are the ones that I could find. But whatever the reason is, you'll always feel as if the other person is not interested in having a conversation with you. They will look bored, even though they might actually enjoy the conversation.
So, I think in a conversation we should try to limit the use of our phones. And when our minds wander off for whatever reason, it's best to admit, acknowledge, and break the conversation. At least then, there will be less time wasted.
