At this exact moment it’s 00:36. Yes, that’s after midnight. This morning my alarm went off at 07.30 and around 22.00 I was back home. I’ve just finished archiving and editing short videos for a five-day filming project. Although I’m a night owl, my eyes are burning as I’m writing this.
Why aren’t you in bed then? Thanks for asking! Well…I’ve made a commitment to write a story, thought, or experiment every day. It’s part of a bigger plan. But it’s an essential part.
So far, I’ve written a story four days in a row. How bad could it be to just skip a day? Well…skipping a day is the easy route. There’s exactly zero effort in not writing today. The guilt I might feel, that can be handled later. Many times I have, and I will, find myself in situations in which choosing the path to a made bed is the most attractive route.
For me, it’s crucial to not skip a day. Not because of the commitment I made to myself or a feeling of guilt. It’s because I need to build a habit. Skipping a day now, especially in the early stages, would mean that I’m like Mario in level one: while trying to jump for the big mushroom, totally miss it, then fall straight into the pit while heavily pouncing on the controller, hoping for a miracle. Only to start again at the beginning.
In other words, skipping now would mean undoing previous work and starting from zero again. Maybe in the far future, when I’ve earned some credibility, I can allow myself to skip a day.
For now, I have to write. To create a habit. To build a skill. To lay a foundation for a bigger dream. No excuses. Let’s see how many stories I’ve written on September 21, 2027.
(P.s. it’s 00:56 now)
